edgeio assets sold to Looksmart and Vast.com

Keith Teare » 02 February 2008 » In News, announcement, edgeio »

edgeio’s assets were sold in December 2007, partly to Looksmart (the live service; the patents; the code; the trademarks) and partly to Vast.com (the real-estate related services).

Please direct all inquiries to one of those companies.

This blog will remain in existence as a historical record of edgeio.

edgeio was an audacious effort to build a fully distributed classified advertising platform for the Internet. It allowed any web site to post classifieds whilst having them syndicated, through edgeio, to any other web site. Aggregation and Distribution are going to be key to may new applications which seek to provide the glue between publishers and readers. edgeio can serve as a model for developers and product designers who seek to build on its legacy.

Edgeio was an incredible idea that turned out to be a bit ahead of its time. the world will be a better place with something like Edgeio in place … something to break down walled gardens and truly have distributed experiences. good luck in your next adventure Keith!!

Do you know if they planning on continuing the service? My site was leveraging edgeio to provide classified functionality to the users, but in the last couple of weeks everything stopped working.

    Thanks,

so thats it? just like that a cool idea that helped lots of people add quality to their sites gets flushed down the pan? I thought edgeio’s business model was fly; probably the best thing since Vaseline! and now people are saying they didn’t make enough revenue from it cause they want something for nothing?…I don’t know of any other free application that have hot features like edgeio did and I sure as hell wouldn’t want to build one from scratch just to make a bit more money. So where dose this leave x members with descent sites who actually got the best from edgeio? whats looksmart’s plan? will they re-establish the business model and service or gone for good?

Purchase the site then suspend it. I’m sure that they have a more expansive use of the technology. Nevertheless, the page views + PR value could well offset the site hosting costs.

    Adios Edgeio.com…

It was so sad that a good idea didn’t work out. I hope such great ideas would work in the future.

edgeio, oodle, and vast were competing against Kijiji and Craigslist. If Craigslist ever wake up and launch a better interface, it can really take over 99% of the market. One thing that can kill craigslist is its own legal issues like this recent “craigslist killer”
